Ombré, Sombré, & Balayage: Get Awesome Highlights with Jodi Salvatore, Ombré Specialist

The latest hair color techniques that are gathering a lot of attention with celebrities and people like you and I are Ombré, Balayage and Sombré. We all envy the sun kissed, beautiful highlights of a child who has spent summer days in the sun and now that look can be achieved with these new techniques.

Ombré refers to a gradual lightening of the hair strand fading from a darker color on top to a lighter color on the ends. There are many variations of this look, some very drastic and some very subtle. Clients should keep this in mind when asking for Ombré hair at the salon. Ombré doesn’t always have to be blonde, the tones can vary depending on skin tone and the clients preference. There are endless possibilities. Look at pictures in magazines and also online to get ideas of different looks.

Note the subtle transition from highlight to natural color.

2014 has brought on some changes to original Ombré with something I call Sombre. Just think Ombré with a more subtle look which is where the term Sombre originates from. Subtle Ombré = Sombre. With this variation there is a less drastic look between the two colors with the root color only being one to two shades darker. Instead of having a pronounced difference which was the trend of 2013, now you get a much softer effect, which in my opinion, is absolutely beautiful and perfect for people who wish for a less pronounced result.

Lastly, one of my favorite techniques is known as Balayage. Balayage is a French term for “to paint.” The colorist’s brush is much smaller in size and angled so that it’s possible to paint vertical strokes with the tip of the brush so that only the top layer of the strand which creates natural, sun-kissed highlights. I enjoy this method because of the freedom to place the highlights in a less traditional approach which caters to each client’s cut.

All of these hair color techniques are currently trending in Scottsdale and many other hip towns all over the world, and can be worn many different ways.
